This animal welfare charity focuses on providing veterinary education and training to vet students and para-vets in Malawi, the warm heart of Africa, while promoting effective Malawi veterinary training.
Veterinary Education Malawi aims to improve the welfare of animals in Malawi through the provision of free educational resources and practical and lecture based training to vet students at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) and to para-vets working in Lilongwe and Dedza.
LUANAR Vet School
The veterinary school at LUANAR, located in Bunda just 15 miles south of the capital city Lilongwe, is a new and small faculty that began its journey in veterinary education with its first cohort graduating in 2019. We emphasize support through lecture and practical-based classes, especially in equine medicine and surgery, as there are currently no equine modules in the curriculum. This training is crucial for vet students who wish to engage in vet volunteering, and we are proud to collaborate with local animal welfare charities in Malawi to enhance the quality of Malawi veterinary training.
Assistant Veterinary Officers (A.V.O)
Assistant Veterinary Officers (A.V.O's) are para-vets who have completed a diploma in Animal Health and Production or Veterinary Sciences. A.V.O's currently provide the majority of veterinary care and treatment in Malawi. However, there is a significant lack of access to continued professional development and educational resources in Malawi veterinary training. As an animal welfare charity, we aim to enhance veterinary education opportunities and support vet students and those interested in vet volunteering, helping to improve animal health in the region.

This initiative also aligns with our commitment to animal welfare charity efforts and contributes to Malawi veterinary training programs, offering valuable vet volunteering opportunities.

We need your help
We are looking for vets and vet students to volunteer with us in Malawi to help us to expand our current projects. We need help to continue to provide educational support to veterinary students and para-vets, and to deliver essential free veterinary outreach clinics to low-income communities.
Surgical Training Courses for Vet Students
Join us and work alongside our animal welfare charity, LSPCA, for surgical and field anaesthesia training courses in and around Lilongwe, Malawi. This initiative is part of our Malawi veterinary training program, where we aim to provide essential veterinary education for vet students and those interested in vet volunteering. Help us deliver free equine castration, canine neutering, and rabies vaccination services. All our efforts are conducted in the field, offering vital free veterinary services to low-income communities.
Educational Projects for Qualified Vets
We need your support on our journey to enhance veterinary education for Malawian veterinary students and para-vets. As an animal welfare charity, we are seeking vets from all disciplines, including those in clinical practice and academic staff, to join us in this vital vet volunteering initiative.
“This experience provided more than first class veterinary education, it gave me cultural perspective that will help me be a better person in every facet of life”

As a trustee, Rebecca oversees the day-to-day operations of the charity and plays a significant role in shaping the overall strategic direction of the organization. With a long-standing passion for animal welfare, she completed an MSc in International Animal Welfare Ethics and Law at the University of Edinburgh in 2021. Her dissertation explored the connection between gender equality and animal welfare among Malawian subsistence farmers, highlighting the importance of veterinary education and Malawi veterinary training. In her spare time, Rebecca enjoys walking with her beautiful Malawian street dog, Maggie, and supporting vet students through vet volunteering initiatives.

Angus is a co-founder of VEM, an animal welfare charity, where he leads the equine side of the charity's activities and is responsible for building the equine curriculum at LUANAR. He is passionate about veterinary education, particularly in teaching and mentoring future veterinary surgeons. Following his first volunteer trip to Malawi in 2020, Angus recognized the critical need for improved Malawi veterinary training in equine veterinary medicine and surgery, especially given the large donkey population and the lack of formal equine veterinary training for vets and para-vets. In the U.K, Angus' interests lie in orthopaedics and sports medicine, and he works at a leading polo veterinary practice in the south of England. This background equips him with a wealth of knowledge and experience that he brings to his work with VEM, where he continues to make a meaningful difference to the lives of equines and their owners in Malawi, inspiring vet students and those interested in vet volunteering.
